SNOW'S
HISTORY
The F. H. Snow's Canning Company was founded in 1920, when Captain Fred
Snow began selling fresh clams in Pine Point, Maine. No stranger to seafood,
Captain Snow capitalized on his family's New England heritage, and more
importantly, his family's good taste, and canned the first can of Snow's
Clam Chowder, from an old family recipe. Snow's Chowder and Clam Products
quickly became the toast of New England.
The Snow's business continued to grow, as did the involvement of various
Snow family members. Captain Snow's eldest son, Herold, worked at his
father's plant when not in the classroom. Eventually, Herold Snow trained
as a chemist at MIT and went to work doing research for DuPont. In 1942,
Herold realized the potential of the seafood business and went back to
work with his father.
Snow's "debuted" on Broadway in 1945, promoting Roger's &
Hammerstein's musical "Carousel." By coincidence, the show featured
a New England sea captain with the name of Enoch Snow - which happened
to be the name of Fred Snow's father. Snow's New England Clam Chowder
was served at the premiere, and promoted in connection with the show.
It was after "Carousel" that Fred received the distinction of
"Captain."
Herold Snow succeeded his father as president of F.H. Snow's Canning
Company until the company was sold to Borden in 1959. The manufacturing
of all Snow's products continued in Pine Point for the next three decades
until moving to the historic Cape May, NJ location in 1990. The Doxsee
franchise (dating back to 1868) was acquired by Borden and merged with
the Snow's Seafood Corporation.
Castleberry's Food Company acquired the Snow's / Doxsee business in 1994.
Today, Snow's/Doxsee enjoys continued growth and strong consumer loyalty,
operating in a 74,000-square foot facility in Cape May, NJ.
